Question about my Ficus

I hope I have the right catagory and spelled the name of my tree right LOL!

I have a Ficus that is I think a variegated (green leaves with a lighter cream to light green trimming the edges of the leaves,,,,anyway,,,,I was wondering, if it would hurt to prune it up a bit (want to make it bushier and shorter).

I was thinking it would actually be healthier for it, but just wasn't sure, especially when one day I clipped off what I thought was a small dead twig, and it started leaking like crazy, so I wanted to check for sure before doing anything. I have had this tree for a few years now, and don't want to loose it.
